Quick summary. The Staff Selection Commission released the SSC CGL 2026 notification on 31 March 2026 for 15,000+ Group B and Group C vacancies across central government ministries, departments and organisations. Tier 1 (CBE) is scheduled for May–June 2026, Tier 2 in September 2026. Eligibility: graduate, age 18–32 (post-wise), Indian citizen. Application fee: ₹100 (free for women, SC/ST/PwBD/ESM). Pay scale ranges from Level 4 (₹25,500–₹81,100) to Level 7 (₹44,900–₹1,42,400) plus DA, HRA and TA. Apply online at ssc.gov.in.

The Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination is the SSC’s flagship recruitment route into central government civilian posts at Group B and Group C levels. It feeds candidates into roles ranging from Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in CSS, Income Tax Inspector (ITI) in CBDT, Excise Inspector in CBIC, Sub-Inspector in CBI and NIA, Auditor / Accountant in CAG, to Tax Assistant and Upper Division Clerk — across more than 25 ministries and 30+ posts.

For 2026, the SSC has retained the four-stage selection process introduced in CGL 2022 (Tier 1 + Tier 2 + Document Verification + Skill / Medical) and continues the fully Computer-Based Examination (CBE) mode. Tier 3 (Descriptive) was discontinued from CGL 2022 onwards; some posts now have a Tier 2 Module 3 typing / data-entry skill test instead.

2. How many vacancies are there in SSC CGL 2026?
More than 15,000 vacancies have been advertised under SSC CGL 2026 across Group B and Group C posts in central government ministries, departments and organisations. The final tentative figure is expected in the range of 15,130 to 18,000 once all department indents are consolidated.
3. What is the eligibility for SSC CGL 2026?
A bachelor's degree (graduate) from any recognised university and Indian citizenship are required. Final-year students can also apply, subject to producing the degree at Document Verification. The age limit is 18–32 years (post-wise narrower: 18–27, 18–30, 20–30) as on 1 August 2026, with standard relaxations for SC, ST, OBC, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen.
4. What is the SSC CGL 2026 application fee?
₹100 for general/OBC male candidates. Female candidates and SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen are exempted from the fee. Payment is online via BHIM-UPI, net banking, debit/credit card, or by generating an SBI challan and paying at any SBI branch.
5. What is the salary in SSC CGL?
Salaries are paid as per the 7th Pay Commission matrix. Level 4 posts (UDC, Tax Assistant) start at ₹25,500 basic (₹40,000–₹46,000 in-hand metro). Level 7 posts (ASO, Income Tax Inspector, Excise Inspector) start at ₹44,900 basic (₹65,000–₹78,000 in-hand metro), plus DA, HRA, TA and ministry-specific allowances.
6. What are the best posts under SSC CGL 2026?
Most aspirants rank Income Tax Inspector (CBDT), Excise Inspector (CBIC), Sub-Inspector in CBI, Assistant Enforcement Officer (ED) and Assistant Section Officer in MEA among the top picks — all are Pay Level 7 posts with strong career growth, postings in major cities, and good promotion ladders. Preferences are filled at the time of application but final allocation depends on rank, category and post-wise vacancy.
7. What is the SSC CGL exam pattern in 2026?
The selection is in four stages: Tier 1 (CBE, 200 marks, 60 min, qualifying), Tier 2 (CBE in 3 papers — Paper 1 for all, Paper 2 only for JSO, Paper 3 only for AAO), followed by Skill/Typing test (DEST), Document Verification, and Medical for relevant posts. The final merit is computed solely from Tier 2 marks (with Tier 1 only as a screening filter).
8. Is there negative marking in SSC CGL 2026?
Yes. Tier 1 and Tier 2 (objective) carry a negative mark of 0.5 for every wrong answer. The Reasoning + Math module of Tier 2 (Module 2 of Paper 1) carries a 1-mark penalty for each wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry zero. So, attempt selectively where you are confident.
9. Can final-year graduation students apply for SSC CGL 2026?
Yes. Candidates in their final year of graduation as on 1 August 2026 are eligible to apply, but must produce their final degree / provisional certificate at the Document Verification stage. Failure to do so leads to rejection of candidature even after clearing all tiers.
10. What is the syllabus for SSC CGL Tier 1?
Tier 1 has 4 sections of 25 questions each — General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness (history, polity, economy, science, current affairs), Quantitative Aptitude (arithmetic + algebra + geometry + DI), and English Comprehension. Each correct answer is +2; each wrong is -0.5; total 200 marks in 60 minutes. Tier 2 expands the same areas with deeper coverage and adds Computer Knowledge (qualifying).

Latest updates (2026)

  • OTRS (One-Time Registration System) mandatory for all SSC exams; Aadhaar verification at OTR is now compulsory.
  • Tier 3 descriptive paper remains discontinued for CGL since 2022; not reintroduced for CGL 2026.
  • Normalisation across shifts continues — equi-percentile method published with the result.
  • Region preference + post preference can be edited within the correction window.
  • Tier 2 result-based final merit is unchanged for CGL 2026 — Tier 1 is purely qualifying.
